Anyone can take a hike...this session will be a short guide to enjoying the natural world just beyond your door. Ted Graef, native of Baltimore Maryland, and partner Rita, native of New York City, have been residents of State College since 1998. Ted and Rita will share some of their favorite local family-friendly hikes.

Our speakers recognize that the outdoors might seem a little overwhelming to those of us who may have found comfort in the cushions of our couch over the last few months. As the weather warms, and snow begins to thaw, even in the rain of a spring morning, RIGHT NOW is the perfect time to get outside. You don’t need expensive gear, or even a well-blazed trail. Ted and Rita will share resources for finding your next walk in the woods, or streamside stroll. They will outline the essential things you should pack for 1 hour walk or an all-day adventure. And they’ll answer your questions about what to expect, and what is expected of you when enjoying the outdoors. This session will have you put on your shoes and grab a friend to head OUTSIDE!

More about our speakers:

An Eagle Scout, BSA Scout Master, and lifelong adventurist, Ted has led multi-day hikes in Utah’s Canyonlands National Park, the most remote area of the Continental U.S. He has brought troops of scouts through the Everglades of Florida and the portage lakes of Canada’s Algonquin Provincial Park (both in peak mosquito season), and has hiked hundreds of miles of trails in between. If not at work (teaching for Penn State) or at home (remodeling his old house), Ted can be found out in the woods. He even sleeps there, preferring clear winter nights where you can see the stars.  Rita is the curator at the Pasto Agricultural Museum at Penn State University and accompanies Ted and their children on many outdoor adventures.
